This week new CDC data indicated obesity rates in the United States have plateaued. While some may view this as hopeful news in our nation’s battle against obesity, a recent Gallup survey should worry all Americans. The percentage of individuals who say they exercise more than 30 minutes at least once a week declined in 2009 from 2008 numbers. Interestingly, despite the large number of new years resolutions to exercise more, the month of January tends to see the least number of individuals exercising.
Low income Americans are less likely to exercise on a regular basis largely due to the lack of a safe place to exercise. Urban planners should take that into account when designing and improving neighborhoods for the better health of our nation.
